Young's modulus of elasticity (or stiffness, E) is an important material property for many applications of polymers and polymer-matrix composites. The common methods of measuring E are by measuring the velocity of ultrasonic pulses through the material or by resistance to flexure, but it is difficult for ultrasound to penetrate polymers that contain filler particles, and flexural measurements require large specimens that may not mimic the clinical case. Thus, it may be difficult to determine E using conventional techniques.

The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between fracture toughness and fractal dimensional increment of two dental glass-ceramics with different volume fraction of crystals and different fracture surface roughness.
Methods: Bar-shaped specimens were prepared from lithium disilicate (LDS) and nanofluorapatite (NFA) glass-ceramics.
Previous studies have reported various methods of measuring the fracture toughness of brittle ceramics. The purpose of the present research was to use a new method of fractal dimension measurement on benchmark materials (silica glass, Viosil SX, Shin-Etsu, = 13, and silicon nitride standard reference material, SRM2100, NIST, = 10), to compare the fracture toughness calculated using different methods, and to study the effect of noise filtering on the fractal dimension and fracture surface roughness. Fracture toughness was determined using surface crack in flexure method according to ASTM C1421 and fractal analysis method.

Fifty-two (52) upper incisors were collected, prepared, and scanned for ceramic veneers. Half of the teeth were restored with veneers made up of feldspathic ceramic (FE), and the other half with zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (SZ).
