Introduction: The ability to detect pathogenic bacteria before the onsets of severe respiratory symptoms and to differentiate bacterial infection allows to improve patient-tailored treatment leading to a significant reduction in illness severity, comorbidity as well as antibiotic resistance. As such, this study refines the application of the non-invasive Secondary Electrospray Ionization-High Resolution Mass Spectrometry (SESI-HRMS) methodology for real-time and early detection of human respiratory bacterial pathogens in the respiratory tract of a mouse infection model.

Methods: A real-time analysis of changes in volatile metabolites excreted by mice undergoing a lung infection by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pneumoniae were evaluated using a SESI-HRMS instrument.

Introduction: Fluoroquinolones are important antibiotics but have associations with a number of adverse outcomes. A recent (January 2024) decision by the UK drug regulator, the Medicines and Health Regulatory Authority (MHRA), restricted systemic use of these antibiotics to when 'absolutely necessary'. One stated reason for the ban was the failure of previous guidance (2019, 2023) to reduce prescribing, with the MHRA stating there had been 'no change in prescribing' of fluoroquinolones in relation to guidance.

The fields of Educational Neuroscience and Mind, Brain, and Education explore how neuroscience and psychology research can be applied to education practice. Prior work in these fields helped to distill and convey various learning strategies to educators, but bidirectional communication between researchers and educators is still very limited. Given the current challenges facing students and educators, such as the student mental health crisis [[1-4] and educator burnout [5-7], there is a great need for more inclusive research translation efforts.
