ATP binds to 2 categories of purine receptors on the surface of cells, the ionotropic P2X receptors and metabotropic P2Y receptors. Included in the family of ionotropic purine receptors is P2X7 (P2X7R), a non-specific cation channel with unique functional and structural properties that suggest it has distinct roles in pathological conditions marked by increased extracellular ATP.

The influence of Black Cohosh on hippocampal and hypothalamic gene expression profiles in ovariectomized rats and its potential to treat menopausal decrease in smell discrimination.

Purpose: Menopause is associated with a decrease in smell discrimination ability. This study assessed the impact of black cohosh on hippocampal (HC) and hypothalamic (HT) gene expression profiles in rats, to understand, if herbal treatment has an impact on neurologic changes due to menopause and whether this could address a decrease in smell discrimination.

Methods: HC and HT tissues from female Sprague Dawley rats (total n = 19) were analyzed at three different life stages: intact tissues of the HC (n = 4) and the HT (n = 4), oophorectomized tissues 3 months after oophorectomy (OVX) of the HC (n = 4) and the HT (n = 3), and tissues after treatment with an isopropanolic extract (iCR) from the rhizomes of black cohosh (60 mg/kg) for 3 months after OVX of the HC (n = 2) and the HT (n = 2).

Positional priapism and scrotal swelling: An unusual presentation of IVC filter associated thrombosis and May-Thurner syndrome.

Scrotal edema and positional priapism are uncommon chief complaints with a scant differential. May-Thurner syndrome as well as inferior vena cava thrombosis are not often associated with these symptoms. This report outlines the case of a 50-year-old male who has undergone pulmonary artery thrombectomy and inferior vena cava filter placement.

Cost-Effectiveness of Unselected Multigene Germline and Somatic Genetic Testing for Epithelial Ovarian Cancer.

Background: Parallel panel germline and somatic genetic testing of all patients with ovarian cancer (OC) can identify more pathogenic variants (PVs) that would benefit from PARP inhibitor (PARPi) therapy, and allow for precision prevention in unaffected relatives with PVs. In this study, we estimate the cost-effectiveness and population impact of parallel panel germline and somatic BRCA testing of all patients with OC incorporating PARPi therapy in the United Kingdom and the United States compared with clinical criteria/family history (FH)-based germline BRCA testing. We also evaluate the cost-effectiveness of multigene panel germline testing alone.
