The ultrasonographic appearance of the ileocecocolic junction (ICCJ), comprising the ileocolic junction (ICJ) and the cecocolic junction (CCJ), has not been established in dogs. The purpose of this prospective study was (1) to evaluate the feasibility and technique of systematic ultrasonographic evaluation of the ICJ and CCJ and (2) to describe its ultrasonographic features. Abdominal ultrasound was performed in 102 fasted dogs, free of digestive signs.

Article Synopsis
  • Alpha-synucleinopathies, including Parkinson's disease and related conditions, show significant sex differences in symptoms, particularly neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS).
  • A systematic review of 240 studies with over 796,000 participants revealed that females generally experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, fatigue, and psychotic symptoms, while males have more prevalence of apathy and impulse control issues.
  • These findings highlight the need to consider sex differences when developing clinical assessments and treatments for these disorders.

Background: Symptoms of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) overlap with primary psychiatric disorders (PPD) making diagnosis challenging. Serum neurofilament light (sNfL) is a candidate biomarker to distinguish bvFTD from PPD, but large-scale studies in PPD are lacking.

Objective: Determine factors that influence sNfL from a large database of PPD patients, and test its diagnostic accuracy.

The caudal neurosecretory system (CNSS) is a neuroendocrine complex, whose existence is specific to fishes. In teleosts, it consists of neurosecretory cells (Dahlgren cells) whose fibers are associated with a neurohemal terminal tissue (urophysis). In other actinopterygians as well as in chondrichthyes, the system is devoid of urophysis, so that Dahlgren cells end in a diffuse neurohemal region.

Objective: To evaluate different suture patterns for gastrostomy closure, with a focus on major complications and survival time. We hypothesized that using a full-thickness single-layer simple continuous pattern would be as safe as the traditional double-layer pattern and would not be associated with more major complications. To our knowledge, this is the first study to compare the suture patterns used for gastric closure in clinical situations.
