Background: Despite high coverage (~98%) of universal varicella vaccination (UVV) in the Republic of Korea since 2005, reduction in the incidence rate of varicella is not obvious. The study aimed to evaluate the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of one-dose UVV by timeline and severity of the disease.

Methods: All children born in Korea in 2011 were included for this retrospective cohort study that analyzed insurance claims data from 2011-2018 and the varicella vaccination records in the immunization registry.

Article Synopsis
  • A study in South Korea analyzed pediatric invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPDs) from 2014 to 2019 to examine changes in serotype distribution following the introduction of pneumococcal vaccines.
  • Vaccine serotypes (VTs) made up a small portion of the isolates (16.1%), while a majority (82.1%) were nonvaccine serotypes (NVTs), with serotype 10A being the most common and significantly increasing over the study period.
  • Most serotype 10A isolates were identified as multidrug-resistant ST11189, highlighting a concerning trend in antibiotic resistance among these infections.

Background: Exercise has proven benefits in rheumatologic disease including reducing inflammation and improving symptoms. A Group Strength Training (GST) program design has improved adherence to exercise in primary care patients but the effect is unknown in rheumatology patients. We examined the interest of rheumatology patients with different diagnoses and the effect of comorbidities in pursuing an organized GST program.

Total residual oxidants (TRO) in treated ballast water can produce various disinfection by-products (DBPs) depending on local conditions, such as salinity and organic matter content in water. Because TRO and DBPs are known to be harmful to aquatic organisms and humans, ecotoxicity tests have been proposed for screening the residual toxicity before discharging treated ballast water. In the present study, we aimed to address the decay rates and toxicity changes of TRO under various conditions in salinity, initial TRO concentrations, and residence time of TRO.
