Alpha-Lipoic Acid Reduces Neuroinflammation and Oxidative Stress Induced by Dapsone in an Animal Model.

Chronic treatment with dapsone (DDS) has been linked to adverse reactions involving all organ systems, such as dapsone hypersensitivity syndrome, methemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia, besides neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration due to iron accumulation and oxidative stress. These effects probably occur due to the presence of its toxic metabolite DDS-NOH, which can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and iron overload. In this sense, antioxidant compounds with chelating properties, such as alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), may be an interesting adjuvant therapy strategy in treating or preventing these effects.

Intermolecular 1,2,4-Thiadiazole Synthesis Enabled by Enzymatic Halide Recycling with Vanadium-Dependent Haloperoxidases.

The enzymatic synthesis of heterocycles is an emerging biotechnology for the sustainable construction of societally important molecules. Herein, we describe an enzyme-mediated strategy for the oxidative dimerization of thioamides enabled by enzymatic halide recycling by vanadium-dependent haloperoxidase enzymes. This approach allows for intermolecular biocatalytic bond formation using a catalytic quantity of halide salt and hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant.

Assessing the Impact of Advanced Cooling Technology in Firefighting Gear during Live Burn Scenario.

Objective: A firefighter wears a standard safety coat, its model unchanged for many years, when tackling a fire. We designed a new cooling system coat with carbon nano tube-based fabric and pouches inside the coat for coolants and fans. The coats, one standard and the other still evolving, are compared on several metrics including core body temperature and thermal comfort.

Kinetics of vibriocidal antibody responses among cholera patients in Goma, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Cholera is a diarrheal disease that continues to burden vulnerable populations globally, primarily due to lack of clean water, optimal sanitation and adequate health infrastructure. Understanding the kinetics of antibody responses elicited by toxigenic infection can inform the Sero-epidemiological estimation of disease burden and impact of vaccination efforts. While antibody kinetics have been well-described in South Asia, such studies based in Africa are lacking, despite the ongoing prevalence of cholera in that region.

Stereo-EEG propagating source reconstruction identifies new surgical targets for epilepsy patients.

Epilepsy surgery can eliminate seizures in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. Surgical intervention requires proper identification of the epileptic network and often involves implanting stereo-EEG electrodes in patients where non-invasive methods are insufficient. However, only ∼60% of patients achieve seizure-freedom following surgery.
