Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on evaluating the safety and effectiveness of psilocybin for patients with severe treatment-resistant depression (TRD), who had not benefited from at least five previous treatments.
  • Conducted over 12 weeks at Sheppard Pratt Hospital, patients received a single 25 mg dose of synthetic psilocybin and underwent therapy sessions before and after dosing, assessing their depression levels mainly with the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS).
  • Results showed significant reductions in depressive symptoms at both 3 weeks and 12 weeks post-treatment, indicating psilocybin’s potential as a viable option for individuals with severe TRD, although those with comorbid PTSD experienced less improvement.

Background: Universal, classroom-based mental health literacy (MHL) curricula are associated with improved mental health knowledge, attitudes, and help-seeking behaviors. Young adolescents are an ideal target given their need for and receptivity toward MHL education.

Methods: We conducted a scoping review to identify universal, school-based MHL programs primarily for students aged 10-14 years, with adequate descriptions of curriculum implementation and content, and measured outcomes.

Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are a large and diverse family of tetrameric cation-selective channels that are activated by many different types of stimuli, including noxious heat or cold, organic ligands such as vanilloids or cooling agents, or intracellular Ca. Structures available for all subtypes of TRP channels reveal that the transmembrane domains are closely related despite their unique sensitivity to activating stimuli. Here, we use computational and electrophysiological approaches to explore the conservation of the cooling agent binding pocket identified within the S1-S4 domain of the Melastatin subfamily member TRPM8, the mammalian sensor of noxious cold, with other TRPM channel subtypes.

Objective: Inhaled medications are commonly used at our single-center, Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). We lacked a standardized process for measuring efficacy of these medications to guide optimal duration of use, potentially leading to their overuse.

Methods: We utilized quality improvement methodology to reduce the length of inhaled hypertonic saline (HTS) course durations and high frequency albuterol use.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) carries a high burden of morbidity and mortality to patient and a high cost to health care systems. Lung transplantation is a last resort available for end-stage COPD patients interested in pursuing it and meeting the strict transplant requirements. It requires commitment from patients and their loved ones to support them through this tough process.
