Electrocaloric effects (ECE) in solid state materials, such as ferroelectric ceramics and ferroelectric polymers, have a great impact in developing cooling systems. Herein, we describe the ECE of a newly synthesized ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal compound at the isotropic-ferroelectric nematic (I-N) phase transition. While the Joule heat completely suppressed the ECE in a DC field, in an AC field with < 1.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among Sri Lankan women, largely linked to HPV infection, prompting a study on HPV prevalence and the effectiveness of vaginal specimens as a screening tool among 35-year-old ever-married women.
  • Conducted from September 2018 to January 2019, the study involved random sampling of women in Kalutara district and used an automated PCR machine to analyze HPV/DNA from collected specimens.
  • Results showed an HPV infection prevalence of 7.08% vaginally and 6.12% cervically, indicating that vaginal screening has high validity and could be an effective cervical cancer screening method if further feasibility studies are initiated.
