Background: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in Europe with a relevant socioeconomic burden. A screening program for vascular diseases in asymptomatic persons with a defined risk constellation can lead to an early diagnosis.

Objective: The study examined a screening program for carotid stenosis, peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) in persons without any known vascular disease with respect to demographic data, risk factors, pre-existing conditions, medication intake, detection of pathological findings and/or findings requiring treatment.

The present review of the biomarkers BNP and NT-pro-BNP is published in the series "biomarkers" of the , which deals with the increasing use of the determination of specific markers in so-called manager preventive and check-up examinations. In principle, BNP and NT-pro-BNP are fundamentally suitable as markers for diagnosing acute and chronic heart failure and for assessing the course. In this context these show a high sensitivity and specificity.

The influence of body temperature on the defensive behaviours of the Eastern garter snake was investigated. Snakes encountered in the field were grabbed by hand at mid-body to imitate the attack of a predator or were approached in the same manner but without any contact by the investigator. Behavioural responses were related to snake body and ambient temperatures.
