Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed long-term outcomes of young patients under 65 with femoral neck fractures (FNFs) treated with closed reduction and internal fixation (CRIF) over the past decade.
  • Involving 52 patients, results showed that no cases of non-union occurred, but 17.3% developed avascular necrosis (AVN) requiring total hip arthroplasty (THA) after about 1.68 years.
  • Factors like age, trauma type, sex, and treatment conditions did not significantly impact patient outcomes, but the time from trauma to surgery was shorter for those who later underwent THA.

The aim of this paper is to present a unique, to the best of our knowledge, case of a patient with a fracture of the first lumbar vertebra (L1), which occurred through a pre-existing Schmorl's node (SN), with histopathological characteristics mimicking a low-grade chondrosarcoma that initially led to a false diagnosis. A 54-year-old woman tripped and fell to the ground, sustaining a fracture of the L1 vertebral body. She was treated conservatively with gradual mobilization using a thoracolumbar brace for six weeks.

Background: Muscle fatty degeneration following rotator cuff tears has been unequivocally associated with poorer functional outcomes and increased risk for retear following rotator cuff repair. Promising results have emerged from animal studies, with the implementation of various interventions for biologic inhibition of this fatty muscle degeneration. The lack of high quality randomized human evidence on this topic, increases the impact of pooled results from animal literature.

Background: Spontaneous non-specific pyogenic spondylodiscitis (SNPS) is a rare medical condition, whose optimal treatment remains controversial. We evaluated the multidisciplinary protocol implemented at our department for the conservative treatment of patients with SNPS.

Methods: Patients with lumbar or thoracic SNPS, whose treatment was initiated conservatively and had at least six months of follow-up, were enrolled in this retrospective audit study.

Purpose: The aim of this meta-analysis was a comparison between medial pivot (MP) and posterior-stabilised (PS) knee designs regarding functional and radiological outcomes as well as gait parameters.

Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Science Direct and Clinical Trials.gov from conception up to April 2022, to identify eligible randomised control trials (RCTs).

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "K Papavasiliou"

  • - K Papavasiliou's recent research focuses on various aspects of orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation, including long-term outcomes of femoral neck fractures, management of spinal conditions, and interventions for muscle degeneration after rotator cuff repairs
  • - Notable findings include the identification of risk factors related to treatment failures in young patients with femoral neck fractures and an evaluation of conservative treatments for spontaneous non-specific pyogenic spondylodiscitis, suggesting their viability in patient management
  • - Additionally, a systematic review conducted by Papavasiliou reveals that medial pivot designs in total knee arthroplasty do not necessarily yield superior clinical outcomes compared to posterior-stabilized designs, contributing to the ongoing debate in orthopedic surgical practices
