The effects of age, genotype and diet on hippocampal subfield iron dysregulation and Alzheimer's disease biomarkers in an ApoE mouse model.

Current theories regarding accumulation of Alzheimer's disease-related deposits of abnormal intra- and extracellular proteins include reactions to inflammation and mitochondrial dysfunction. In this study, we explored whether age, genotype and inflammation via diet have a greater effect on dysregulatory protein accumulation in any particular subfield of the hippocampus. We stained for ferritin, ferroportin, hyperphosphorylated tau and β-amyloid proteins in the hippocampal region of Apolipoprotein E2 (ApoE2), ApoE3 or ApoE4 mice fed a control diet or a hypothesized inflammation-inducing methionine diet and euthanized at 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.

Trigeminal neuralgia induced by brainstem infarction treated with pontine descending tractotomy: illustrative case.

Background: While cases of trigeminal neuralgia induced by a brainstem infarct have been reported, the neurosurgical literature lacks clear treatment recommendations in this subpopulation.

Observations: The authors present the first case report of infarct-related trigeminal neuralgia treated with pontine descending tractotomy that resulted in durable pain relief after multiple failed surgical interventions, including previous microvascular decompressions and stereotactic radiosurgery. A neuronavigated pontine descending tractotomy of the spinal trigeminal tract was performed and resulted in successful pain relief for a 50-month follow-up period.

Dantrolene Prevents the Lymphostasis Caused by Doxorubicin in the Rat Mesenteric Circulation.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a risk factor for arm lymphedema in breast cancer patients. We reported that DOX opens ryanodine receptors (RYRs) to enact "calcium leak," which disrupts the rhythmic contractions of lymph vessels (LVs) to attenuate lymph flow. Here, we evaluated whether dantrolene, a clinically available RYR1 subtype antagonist, prevents the detrimental effects of DOX on lymphatic function.

Lymphadenopathy as a Prodrome for Systemic Lupus Erythematous.

Background: Lupus lymphadenopahy (LL) has an estimated incidence of 1% at diagnosis. Here, we report a case of systemic lupus erythematous which presented with a prodrome of generalized lymphadenopathy and fevers.

Case Presentation: A 41-year-old woman presented to the hospital with one month of fevers, chills, lymphadenopathy, abdominal pain, a bilateral upper extremity rash, and malaise.
