Aim: Validation of the oncological safety of nipple-sparing subcutaneous mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with implants (NSM) and of the outcome in patients with locoregional recurrences (LRRs) after this procedure.

Methods: Two-hundred and sixteen patients, mean age of 52.8 (29-81) years with primary unilateral breast cancer, not suitable for partial mastectomy because of large (>3cm) or multifocal carcinoma, underwent NSM, a single procedure lasting about 1h 30min, between December 1988 and September 1994.

One hundred and seven breast cancer patients underwent subcutaneous mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with a subcutaneously-placed, round, saline-filled prosthesis with a textured surface. The primary aim of this prospective study was to determine the frequency of capsular contracture in both irradiated and non-irradiated breasts after this operation. Two different types of round implants with different pore sizes on their textured surfaces, Siltex and Microcell, were randomly chosen.

In order to identify the genomic regions that might confer susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS) in the Spanish population, we have performed a genome-wide screen for association in patients with MS using pooled DNA from 200 clinical cases and 200 healthy controls. The pools were typed using 5546 microsatellites. The typing was repeated for the most promising 1269 markers after which 191 potentially associated markers were identified.

Genetic factors are known to influence susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS) but the genes involved are largely undefined. Here, we report an association study based on 200 patients and 200 controls from the Porto region in Portugal. A total of 3974 markers were successfully typed from which we have identified 46 markers showing evidence of association.

We have performed the first systematic search for MS susceptibility genes completed in the Polish population. This screen was performed using 6000 microsatellite markers typed in pooled DNA from cases (n=200), controls (n=200) and trio families (n=129). Five associated markers are identified, one (D6S2444) from the HLA region and four are from novel regions not previously associated with MS, 2p16 (D2S2153), 3p13 (D3S3568), 7p22 (D7S2521) and 15q26 (D15S649).
