Inhibition of monoamine oxidase B by selected benzimidazole and caffeine analogues.

We have recently reported that a series of (E)-8-styrylcaffeines and (E)-2-styrylbenzimidazoles are moderate to very potent competitive inhibitors of monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). The most potent member of the series was found to be (E)-8-(3-chlorostyryl)caffeine (CSC) with an enzyme-inhibitor dissociation constant (K(i) value) of 128 nM. In the present study, we have prepared additional caffeine and benzimidazole analogues in an attempt to identify compounds with improved MAO-B inhibition potency while still acting reversibly.

Resurgence in the incidence of HIV and syphilis infections has been reported from all Western European Countries and the USA during the past years, the majority of them in men who have sex with men. The attitude among HIV-positive patients towards the application of preventive measures is changing in comparison to the time immediately after the detection of the HIV. Furthermore, HIV care providers do not always talk in an open manner about safer sex and disclosure, with the result that a large group of patients regards oral sex as harmless with respect to the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Milk EPD, used to predict the milk production potential of a parent's daughters, have been reported by all major cattle breed associations. Evaluation of indicators of erythropoiesis stimulated by recombinant human erythropoietin in renal anemia.

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rh-EPO) was administered to 11 anemic children with end-stage renal disease who were undergoing hemodialysis. Hematocrit (Hct), absolute reticulocyte count (retics), creatine concentration of red cells and erythrocyte density test (EDT) were chosen as indicators of rh-EPO effect on erythropoiesis. In the present report the first 9 weeks shall be presented in which all patients received an identical dosage of rh-EPO per kg body weight.
