Headache and the lower cervical spine: long-term, postoperative follow-up after decompressive neck surgery.

A retrospective search for headache sufferers was conducted among patients operated on for cervicobrachialgia, and the operative results were evaluated. We also tried to classify the preoperative headache according to current headache classification systems. A total of 187 patients were operated on with Smith-Robinson's method, or by "simple" foraminectomy/ facetectomy.

Cytokine enhancement of endothelin ET(B) receptor-mediated contraction in human temporal artery.

Segments of human temporal artery were incubated in organ culture for 2 days in the absence or presence of cytokines. Thereafter, contractions were induced by the selective endothelin ET(B) receptor agonist sarafotoxin S6c, a peptide that does not induce contraction in fresh human temporal artery. Interleukin-1beta was most potent in increasing the sarafotoxin-induced contraction in cultured segments.

[Medullary compression in metastatic cancer].

Cancer patients with spinal cord compression may develop irreversible neurological deficit. The clinical picture implies back pain and subsequent neurological deficit. There is always a danger of rapid deterioration of the patient's condition.

[Percutaneous lumbar diskectomy].

At the Department of Neurosurgery in Trondheim, 17 patients with low backpain and sciatica have been operated upon using percutaneous lumbal discectomy. The procedure was carried out under local anaesthesia and all patients were discharged on the first day after operation. Seven patients recovered completely, four patients showed some improvement, and six patients showed no change.

Low concentrations of lithium and cyclooxygenase inhibitors enhance endothelin-1 (ET-1)-induced contractions in human temporal artery, but not in porcine ophthalmic artery.

Endothelins are a recently discovered group of potent vasoconstrictor peptides synthesized by endothelial cells and other tissues in various species, which seem to participate in the regulation of vascular tonus. Abnormalities in vasoactivity in the head may be an important event in headache pathophysiology, although the mechanisms responsible for such constrictions and/or dilations are not known. The endothelium and its constrictor peptide, endothelin, may play a key role in such mechanisms.
