Background: Spousal loss is a stressful life event that is associated with loneliness and social isolation, both of which affect mental and physical health. The primary objective of this paper was to synthesize longitudinal studies that investigated loneliness and social isolation in widowhood.

Methods: A systematic search of the literature was conducted using three electronic databases.

Article Synopsis
  • A new in situ measurement technique for studying metal/metal-oxide mixtures at extreme temperatures (over 2000 K) was developed to enhance nuclear safety engineering.
  • The researchers successfully conducted simultaneous XAFS-XRD measurements to track Zr oxidation and the ZrO-YO reaction over a range of temperatures (up to 2519 K), revealing significant chemical shifts.
  • The study also explored the temperature effects on local structure dynamics, comparing experimental data with theoretical models, and proposed potential applications for analyzing nuclear fuel materials like UO-Zr.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between visible perivascular spaces (PVS) on MRI and brain atrophy in 216 older adults, focusing on PVS in the basal ganglia (BG-PVS) and white matter (WM-PVS).
  • Researchers used various quantitative indexes to assess brain morphology and atrophic changes, including the CSF/intracranial volume ratio and the Fazekas scale for white matter lesions.
  • Findings indicated that BG-PVS enlargement correlates with increased atrophy, while lower WM-PVS grades are associated with an "iNPH-like conformation," suggesting that varying visibility of PVS reflects underlying brain abnormalities.

Objective: To characterize intrapancreatic late enhancement (ILE) observed in the early stages of pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAC).

Methods: Among 203 patients pathologically diagnosed with PAC between October 2011 and February 2021, 32 patients with pre-diagnostic abdominal contrast-enhanced CT performed from 6 months to 5 years before the diagnosis were enrolled in this study. Indirect findings (IFs) on pre-diagnostic CT, including ILE, were evaluated and examined for various clinical data and time intervals to diagnosis (TIDs).

The single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs3184504 is broadly associated with increased risk for multiple autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases. Although the allele is uniquely enriched in European descent, the mechanism for the widespread selective sweep is not clear. In this study, we find the rs3184504*T allele had a strong association with reduced mortality in a human sepsis cohort.
