Social-emotional effects of early childhood education programs in Tulsa.

This article assesses the effects of Tulsa, Oklahoma's early childhood education programs on social-emotional outcomes, examining teacher ratings of children's behavior from the Adjustment Scales for Preschool Intervention and a measure of attentiveness using fixed effects regressions with propensity score matching. The sample includes 2,832 kindergarten students in 2006, of whom 1,318 participated in the Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) pre-K program and 363 participated in the CAP of Tulsa County Head Start program the previous year. Program participation was associated with lower timidity and higher attentiveness for TPS pre-K alumni and a marginally significant reduction in timidity for Head Start alumni.

Genetic analysis of the requirements for SOS induction by nalidixic acid in Escherichia coli.

Nalidixic acid, the prototype antibacterial quinolone, induces the SOS response by a mechanism that requires the RecBCD nuclease/helicase. A key step inferred for this induction pathway is the conversion of a drug-induced gyrase cleavage complex into a DNA break that can be processed by RecBC. We tried to clarify the nature of this step by searching for additional gene products that are specifically necessary for SOS induction following nalidixic acid treatment.

Milk-alkali syndrome. A consequence of chronic antacid abuse.

The case described here illustrates the need to consider milk-alkali syndrome in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia, even in this age of histamine2 blockers and mucosal protectors. Thorough history taking and gastrointestinal workup help rule out alternative causes of hypercalcemia, such as cancer, hyperparathyroidism, and other metabolic and endocrine diseases. Milk-alkali syndrome is managed by administration of saline solution and loop diuretics and avoidance of thiazide diuretics.

Comparison of autogenous fistula versus expanded polytetrafluoroethylene graft fistula for angioaccess in hemodialysis.

A hundred patients with RCAV fistulas we compared with 100 patients with expanded PTFE fistulas created during the same time period. The fistulas were analyzed to compare early and late thrombosis, life table patency, infection rate, venous hypertension, and vascular steal. There was a significantly greater incidence of early thrombosis in the RCAV fistula group.
