Tiotropium in asthmatic adolescents symptomatic despite inhaled corticosteroids: a randomised dose-ranging study.

Introduction: Tiotropium, a once-daily long-acting anticholinergic agent, has been shown to be an efficacious and safe add-on treatment for adults with symptomatic asthma, despite treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). A large proportion of asthmatic adolescents have symptomatic disease despite a wide range of therapeutic options. We investigated the efficacy and safety of three doses of tiotropium, administered in the evening (via Respimat(®) SoftMist™ inhaler), versus placebo in asthmatic adolescents symptomatic despite ICS treatment.

In response to stress, cells produce a series of heat shock proteins (Hsps). One of the most prominent Hsps, is the 70 kDa Hsp (Hsp70). Hsp70 is a highly conserved and essential protein against stress.

Thyroid hormones, cytokines, physical training and metabolic control.

During the acute training response, peripheral cellular mechanisms are mainly metabolostatic to achieve energy supply. During prolonged training, glycogen deficiency occurs; this is associated with increased expression of local cytokines, and decreased insulin secretion and beta-adrenergic stimulation and lipolysis in adipose tissue which looses energy. This is indicated by decrease of adipocyte hormone leptin, which has inhibitory effects on excitatory hypothalamic neurons.

Overexpression of the sarcolemmal calcium pump in the myocardium of transgenic rats.

The plasma membrane calmodulin-dependent calcium ATPase (PMCA) is a calcium-extruding enzyme controlling Ca2+ homeostasis in nonexcitable cells. However, its function in the myocardium is unclear because of the presence of the Na+/Ca2+ exchanger. We approached the question of the physiological function of the calcium pump using a transgenic "gain of function" model.
