Article Synopsis
  • International guidelines for imaging follow-up after pancreatic resection for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are inconsistent, leading to varied follow-up strategies globally.
  • The study aimed to compare clinical outcomes, including treatment for recurrence and survival rates, between patients who received either symptomatic follow-up or routine imaging after PDAC surgery across 33 international centers.
  • A total of 333 patients were analyzed, showing that 29% had symptomatic follow-up while 71% underwent routine imaging, with overall survival rates being examined through statistical methods to identify the impact of the follow-up strategy on patient outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated how preoperative quality of life scores (EORTC QLQ-C30) relate to metrics like age and BMI in elderly patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery.
  • It included 118 patients over 65 with resectable cancer, revealing negative correlations between QLQ scores and age, as well as differences in scores based on the type of cancer (rectal vs colon).
  • The findings suggest that lower preoperative QLQ scores are linked to longer recovery times and complications, indicating that these scores can predict postoperative outcomes in older patients.

The establishment of a postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is considered the most common and, concomitantly, the most serious complication associated with pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD). The search for either technical modifications of the operative technique or pharmaceutical interventions that could possibly aid in decreasing the incidence of this often-devastating complication appears justified. The stenting of the pancreatic duct, with the use of either internal or external stents, has been evaluated in this direction.

Background: The surgeon performing a distal gastrectomy, has an arsenal of reconstruction techniques at his disposal, Billroth II among them. Braun anastomosis performed during a Billroth II procedure has shown evidence of superiority over typical Billroth II, in terms of survival, with no impact on postoperative morbidity and mortality.

Aim: To compare Billroth II Billroth II and Braun following distal gastrectomy, regarding their postoperative course.
