We investigate the impact of a 20-yr irrigation on root water uptake (RWU) and drought stress release in a naturally dry Scots pine forest. We use a combination of electrical resistivity tomography to image RWU, drone flights to image the crown stress and sensors to monitor soil water content. Our findings suggest that increased water availability enhances root growth and resource use efficiency, potentially increasing trees' resistance to future drought conditions by enabling water uptake from deeper soil layers.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the rise of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) since 2010, finding that 2.4% of S. aureus infections are now VRSA, along with challenges posed by hVISA isolates.
  • Researchers analyzed 845 isolates, confirming 246 as S. aureus, with molecular techniques identifying various vancomycin resistance genes, especially vanA, vanB, and vanD.
  • Results indicated that a notable percentage (8%) of isolates exhibited glycopeptide non-susceptibility, with some showing a concerning increase in minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), which could complicate infection control efforts and antibiotic guidelines.

Objectives: To describe rare genetic interactions of α-thalassemia alleles causing Hb H disease and Hb Bart's hydrops fetalis which could lead to diagnostic errors in a routine practice.

Methods: Hematological and molecular characterization were carried out in a Thai family with a risk of having fetus with Hb Bart's hydrops fetalis.

Results: Both parents were found to be the thalassemia intermedia patients associated with unusual forms of Hb H disease.

The transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) through unsaturated source-zone soils is a critical yet poorly understood aspect of their environmental behavior. To date, most experimental studies have only focused on the equilibrium or non-equilibrium partitioning of PFASs to the air-water interface, or solid-phase based equilibrium or non-equilibrium transport. Currently, there are discrepancies between air-water interfacial partitioning (K) results measured using a drainage-based column method (which supports a Langmuir isotherm) when compared to measurements from alternative experimental methods (which support a Freundlich isotherm).

Carbapenem-resistant pose a significant threat to global public health due to the dearth of available treatment options, resulting in infections with high mortality and morbidity. The study aimed to investigate the mechanism of carbapenem resistance in a carbapenem non-susceptible isolate recovered from an urinary tract infection patient admitted to a tertiary referral hospital, through whole-genome sequencing using Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform. Carbapenemase production followed by antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed following Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute guidelines.
