Understanding the resuspension of droplets from surfaces into air is important for elucidating a range of processes such as disease transmission of airborne pathogens and determining environmental contamination and the effectiveness of cleaning procedures. The resuspension condition is defined as the escape velocity of a droplet from a surface. This study investigated the dynamics of microliter-sized droplet resuspension off surfaces utilizing a novel free-fall device.

Introduction: Malnutrition contributes to 45% of all childhood deaths globally, but these modelled estimates lack direct measurements in countries with high malnutrition and under-5 mortality rates. We investigated malnutrition's role in infant and child deaths in the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network.

Methods: We analysed CHAMPS data from seven sites (Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and South Africa) collected between 2016 and 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Multidrug-resistant bacteria, especially ESBL-producing strains like Klebsiella pneumoniae, are a major global health threat, with this study focusing on Kp04, a clinical isolate from Bangladesh.
  • The investigation revealed high antibiotic resistance, with five isolated K. pneumoniae strains being resistant to 14 out of 21 tested antibiotics while only being sensitive to three specific ones.
  • Whole-genome sequencing of Kp04 identified 75 genes associated with ESBL, virulence, and multiple drug resistance, highlighting similarities in virulence and resistance among isolates from Dhaka and Chattogram, indicating possible transmission of these strains in the region.
