A Complex Adaptive Systems Approach to Health Professions Education Transformation: The Case of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine and an Integrated Quality Improvement-Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Curriculum.

Objectives: In 2003, the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine (MU SOM) initiated an integrated quality improvement-interprofessional collaborative practice (QI-ICP) curriculum as part of a larger curriculum renewal process. While exploring a different case study focused on the content of the curriculum, investigators became intrigued by MU SOM's approach to change, specifically, how complex adaptive systems (CAS) thinking may have supported sustained transformational change in curriculum across multiple health professions programs. The primary aim of this study was to elucidate the aspects of MU's experience with transformation that were grounded in CAS.

Case Report: Intravascular Lithotripsy of Calcified Iliac Artery Disease to Facilitate Kidney Transplantation.

Intravascular lithotripsy is a novel technique that treats calcified atherosclerotic disease using shock waves to disrupt the rigid plaque. It is an evolving technique with high reported success rates and minimal complications. Calcified plaque in the aorto-iliac arteries is highly prevalent in patients with renal impairment and is a major barrier to kidney transplantation.

Slice'N'Dice: maximizing the value of predicted models for structural biologists.

With the advent of next-generation modelling methods, such as AlphaFold2, structural biologists are increasingly using predicted structures to obtain structure solutions via molecular replacement (MR) or model fitting in single-particle cryogenic sample electron microscopy (cryoEM). Differences between the domain-domain orientations represented in a predicted model and a crystal structure are often a key limitation when using predicted models. Slice'N'Dice is a software package designed to address this issue by first slicing models into distinct structural units and then automatically placing the slices using either Phaser, MOLREP or PowerFit.

Background and Foreground: Connections and Distinctions When Health Professions Faculty Teach Both Interprofessional Collaborative Practice and Quality Improvement-A Case Study.

Objectives: Despite decades of effort, programs continue to struggle to integrate competencies related quality improvement (QI) and interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP) into health professions education. Additionally, while QI and ICP may seem intuitively linked and there exists some examples of a coordinated approach, the literature regarding competencies, including knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs), is still largely focused on QI and ICP as separate fields of knowledge and practice. This study explored distinctions and connections between quality improvement (QI) and interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP) competency domains in health professions education.

Exploration of treatment burden through examination of workload and patient capacity during transition onto kidney replacement therapy: a systematic review of qualitative research.

Background: Patients with advanced chronic kidney disease requiring initiation of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) are frequently asked to enact complex management plans. Treatment burden has been defined as the effect of healthcare workload and the capacity a person has to manage this workload has on wellbeing. The aim of this review is to examine the experience of healthcare workload and the factors that affect capacity to meet that workload for people transitioning onto KRT for the first time, using a framework synthesis of published literature informed by normalisation process theory (NPT) and theory of patient capacity (TPC).
