Article Synopsis
  • The article explores the development of the anesthesia assistant (AA) profession in Canada, highlighting its growth over the last 50 years since its formal recognition in Quebec and 15 years in other provinces.
  • Data was collected from 19 institutions across 8 provinces regarding factors such as recruitment, training, credentialing, and roles, revealing significant variations in AA responsibilities influenced by provincial health care governance.
  • The findings indicate that while AAs play a crucial role in anesthesia care, including equipment maintenance and supporting anesthesiologists, there is a lack of standardized metrics for assessing patient safety and operational efficiency in their practices across Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • * Current knowledge about how gas emboli develop and behave at the microscale is limited, but microfluidic networks can mimic the conditions in small blood vessels to study this phenomenon.
  • * Findings from this study indicate that narrower channels produce longer bubbles, higher blood concentrations increase air bubble resistance, and certain bifurcation angles enhance the likelihood of gas embolism events, implying that microfluidic experimentation could aid in improving medical guidelines for gas embolism management.

The Guidelines to the Practice of Anesthesia Revised Edition 2012 (the guidelines) were prepared by the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society (CAS), which reserves the right to determine their publication and distribution. Because the guidelines are subject to revision, updated versions are published annually. Whereas previous versions of the guidelines appeared as special supplements to the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia (the Journal), this edition of the guidelines is published within the Journal.
