Successful Use of EPOCH-R in 2 Young Adult Patients With Burkitt Lymphoma and Acute Kidney Injury: A Case Report.

Pediatric Burkitt lymphoma has historically been treated with intensive methotrexate-based chemotherapy, which improves patient survival while causing severe toxicities. Young patients typically have better outcomes with intensive therapies, while adults and immunocompromised patients have higher toxicities and worse outcomes. Newer treatment regimens, including etoposide, prednisone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, rituximab (EPOCH-R), show promise for these patients.

Risk factors for bacteremia and central line-associated blood stream infections in children with acute myelogenous leukemia: A single-institution report.

Background: Central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) are a source of high morbidity and mortality in children with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).

Procedure: To understand the epidemiology and risk factors associated with the development of CLABSI in children with AML.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients with AML over a 5-year period between 2007 and 2011 at the Children's Hospital Colorado.

Humanism and professionalism education for pediatric hematology-oncology fellows: A model for pediatric subspecialty training.

Background: Humanism and professionalism are virtues intrinsic to the practice of medicine, for which we lack a standard, evidence-based approach for teaching and evaluation. Pediatric hematology-oncology (PHO) fellowship training brings new and significant stressors, making it an attractive setting for innovation in humanism and professionalism training.

Procedure: We electronically surveyed a national sample of PHO fellows to identify fellows' educational needs in humanism and professionalism.

The use of a tablet computer platform to optimize the care of patients receiving peritoneal dialysis: a pilot study.

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) affords patients increased independence and improved quality of life. However, the lack of more frequent monitoring may compromise outcomes and decrease wider uptake of this modality. This study uses a novel tablet computer-based interface to allow real-time monitoring and two-way communication to better link PD patients with a dialysis center and care providers.
