The complex non-centrosymmetric and chiral nature of helical structures endow materials that possess such motifs with unusual properties. However, despite their ubiquity in biological and organic systems, there is a severe lack of inorganic crystals that display helicity in extended lattices, where these unusual properties are expected to be most pronounced. Here, we report a new inorganic helical structure, gallium sulfur iodide (GaSI), within the exfoliable class of III-VI-VII (1:1:1) one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals.

During the development of indazolylpyrimidines as novel and potent inhibitors of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor-2 (VEGFR2) tyrosine kinase, we observed that some human tumour xenografts are more sensitive to VEGFR2 kinase inhibitors than others. A better understanding of the basis for this differential response may help to identify a predictive marker that would greatly aid in the identification of a suitable patient population for treatment. One representative compound from the indazolylpyrimidine series is GW654652 that inhibited all three VEGFRs with similar potency.

Uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation have relevance to bioenergetics and obesity. The mechanisms of action of chemical uncouplers of oxidative phosphorylation on biological systems were evaluated using differential gene expression. The transcriptional response in human rhabdomyosarcoma cell line (RD), was elucidated following treatment with carbonyl cyanide p-(trifluoromethoxy) phenylhydrazone (FCCP), a classical uncoupling agent.

Expression levels of 767 genes were measured in HepG2 cells at eight time points (0, 0.5, 1, 6, 12, 16, 20, and 24 h) following exposure to the oxidizing agent, diethyl maleate (DEM). DEM treatment caused an immediate and sustained loss of intracellular GSH, with a concomitant increase in GSSG.
