Severe gastrointestinal problems in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A case series.

Due to improved supportive care, survival of patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) has increased significantly. Consequently, new challenges emerge in adult patients with DMD. In clinical practice we increasingly see patients with serious, even life-threatening, gastrointestinal (GI) problems in advanced disease stages.

[Unrecognised sexual abuse and abdominal and pelvic complaints].

Sexual abuse is a risk factor for developing various abdominal and pelvic complaints. In this clinical lesson we present one case, highlighting this connection and how it can be missed by different medical professionals. Early identification of the underlying connection with sexual abuse can prevent re-traumatization by medical treatments, reduce the risk of the patient being abused again and raises the opportunity for a more appropriate treatment, such as addition or trauma therapy and/or pelvic physiotherapy.

Ferric carboxymaltose infusion versus oral iron supplementation for preoperative iron deficiency anaemia in patients with colorectal cancer (FIT): a multicentre, open-label, randomised, controlled trial.

Background: A third of patients with colorectal cancer who are eligible for surgery in high-income countries have concomitant anaemia associated with adverse outcomes. We aimed to compare the efficacy of preoperative intravenous and oral iron supplementation in patients with colorectal cancer and iron deficiency anaemia.

Methods: In the FIT multicentre, open-label, randomised, controlled trial, adult patients (aged 18 years or older) with M0 stage colorectal cancer scheduled for elective curative resection and iron deficiency anaemia (defined as haemoglobin level of less than 7·5 mmol/L (12 g/dL) for women and less than 8 mmol/L (13 g/dL) for men, and a transferrin saturation of less than 20%) were randomly assigned to either 1-2 g of ferric carboxymaltose intravenously or three tablets of 200 mg of oral ferrous fumarate daily.

Optimising diagnostics to discriminate complicated from uncomplicated appendicitis: a prospective cohort study protocol.

Introduction: Growing evidence is showing that complicated and uncomplicated appendicitis are two different entities that may be treated differently. A correct diagnosis of the type of appendicitis is therefore essential. The Scoring system of Appendicitis Severity (SAS) combines clinical, laboratory and imaging findings.

Real-time diagnostic accuracy of blue light imaging, linked color imaging and white-light endoscopy for colorectal polyp characterization.

Fujifilm has developed a novel ELUXEO 7000 endoscope system that employs light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at four different wavelengths as light sources that enable blue light imaging (BLI), linked color imaging (LCI), and high-definition white-light endoscopy (HD-WLE). The aim of this study was to address the diagnostic accuracy of real-time polyp characterization using BLI, LCI and HD-WLE (ELUXEO 7000 endoscopy system). This is a prespecified post-hoc analysis of a prospective study in which 22 experienced endoscopists (> 2,000 colonoscopies) from eight international centers participated.
