Purpose: To explore young, multi-ethnic adolescents' attitudes and influences related to cigarette smoking for the purpose of developing and producing a youth-led, tobacco prevention drama.
Design: Focus groups and demographic surveys.
Setting: Island of Oahu, Hawaii.
The use of drama as a preventive education measure has demonstrated success in various health promotion venues and offers promise in promoting positive youth attitudes and behavior change related to tobacco use. Especially important is a need to implement culturally relevant methods to reach youth. This article describes the development and implementation of a tobacco prevention drama for Asian and Pacific Islander youth.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThis 20-year follow-up report presents the incidence of definite coronary events and its relation to serum total cholesterol (TC) and alpha-lipoprotein cholesterol percentage (percentage of serum TC bound with alpha-lipoprotein), now usually called high-density lipoprotein cholesterol percentage (HDL-C%). The cohort consists of 1,454 men and 1,481 women, presumably healthy, aged 35 to 64 years at the time of entrance examination in 1964. During the follow-up period 123 men and 44 women died from coronary disease.

Twenty-six agricultural workers, all of them Yemenite Jews, received a high-caloric, high-fat diet, and the changes in serum cholesterol (CH), high-density-lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, and body weight were assessed. Yemenite Jews as a group are characterized by low serum CH levels and by a low incidence of coronary artery disease.
