Ivermectin toxicosis in a dog.

A 5-year-old male Doberman Pinscher was examined after ingesting an equine paste dewormer containing approximately 115 mg of ivermectin. Clinical signs consisted of profound hypothermia, mild dehydration, dilated unresponsive pupils, localized muscle group fasciculations around the face and hind limbs, and no response to any external stimuli. Twelve days after parenteral administration of isotonic fluids and IV administration of dexamethasone and dimethyl sulfoxide, the dog returned to a clinically normal neurologic state.

Tracheal reconstruction with autogenous jejunal microsurgical transfer.

Tracheal defects due to stricture formation, tracheomalacia, and neoplasms can present difficult reconstructive problems. Tracheal defects were surgically created in 6 dogs and primarily reconstructed with microsurgical free tissue transfer of autogenous jejunal segments. Primary healing was accomplished in all dogs without severe air leakage or infection.

Endotracheal tube leak pressure and tracheal lumen size in swine.

Endotracheal tube "leak" is often estimated in children to judge the fit of uncuffed endotracheal tubes within the trachea. Twenty-five swine were intubated with uncuffed tracheal tubes to determine whether a more sensitive measurement of leaks could be devised and whether leak pressure estimates fit between tracheal tube and trachea. We compared leak pressure measurement using a stethoscope and aneroid manometer with a technique using a microphone, pressure transducer, and recorder, and found no differences between the two methods.

Assessment of an implantable ileostomy sphincter.

A totally implanted, intermittently inflatable, silicone rubber cuff, reservoir, and control mechanism were evaluated for use as an artificial sphincter in 18 female beagle dogs that had undergone ileostomy. The dogs were divided into daily 8-hour occlusion, test, and always open, control, groups. Animals were evaluated daily for continence and peristomal irritation.

Segmental aplasia of the uterine horn in a cat.

A 4.5-year-old female domestic longhair cat with a history of intermittent abdominal distention following estrus and infertility was admitted for routine vaccinations. Radiographs revealed 2 large blunt-ended tubular structures overlapping each other in the abdomen.
