Information on virulence and persistence factors of enterococci as important nosocomial pathogens with ever increasing multiple drug resistance is updated. The importance of the virulent and persistent properties of enterococci in the processes of adhesion to host tissues, invasion, modulation of inflammatory responses, as well as their toxic action on the host body is considered. The pathogenicity factors of enterococci are relevant to the mechanisms of the bacterial survival in the host.

The species compositions and persistence factors of the vaginal and cervical microflora of the reproductive tract of women in cases of intrauterine interventions (medical abortion, intrauterine contraception) were studied. Women with inflammatory complications following intrauterine interventions were found to have the same species of bacteria in their vaginal and cervical microflora. In addition, an increase in the values of the persistence factors of vaginal microflora was registered in women practicing intrauterine contraception and a decrease in the persistence potential of vaginal microflora was registered after abortion.

Antiradiation therapeutic efficiency of translam (1-->3; 1-->6-beta-D-glucan) produced by enzymatic synthesis out of laminarin, polysaccharide of Laminaria cychorioides, has been studied in four animal species (mice, guinea-pigs, dogs, monkeys). A stable curative effect has been observed following its administration within first 24 h after radiation exposure at doses that cause acute radiation sickness (about LD90). The preparation is nontoxic and has a broad therapeutic range which permits its practical application.
