Soft ticks in the genus Ornithodoros occur throughout the Mojave Desert in southern Nevada, southeastern California, and parts of southwestern Utah and northwestern Arizona, USA, and are frequently observed parasitizing Mojave desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii). However, limited research exists examining the relationship between ticks and desert tortoises. Mojave desert tortoises are listed as threatened by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and as such, their populations are monitored and individual tortoise health is routinely assessed.

- Generalization helps us apply past experiences to new situations, and the infralimbic (IL) area in the brain is important for this process, although how it works is still not fully understood.
- In an experiment with mice, it was found that manipulating the IL's activity affected their defensive behaviors in response to ambiguous threats: silencing the IL increased generalized freezing, while stimulating it encouraged more vigilant behavior.
- Additionally, researchers identified specific groups of neurons (ensembles) in the IL that were linked to these generalized responses, revealing that these neuronal ensembles help control the degree of generalization when facing uncertain dangers.
Importance: Pediatric patients with complex medical problems benefit from pediatric sub-specialty care; however, a significant proportion of children live greater than 80 mi. away from pediatric sub-specialty care.
Objective: To identify current knowledge gaps and outline concrete next steps to make progress on issues that have persistently challenged the pediatric nephrology workforce.
