Most infections causing by Streptococcus pyogenes are known to be putrid both in adults and children, for example laryngitis, impetigo, cellulitis, scarlet fever, septic shock, toxic shock syndrome etc. Their clinical importance relates to a number of causes: 1) about 20% of the population are S. pyogenes carriers; 2) the clinical course of infections is often severe or even fatal; 3) there is real danger of nosocomial outbursts; 4) a world-wide increase in both the rate and invasiveness of the microbe.
