Tropical peatland fires play a significant role in the context of global warming through emissions of substantial amounts of greenhouse gases. However, the state of knowledge on carbon loss from these fires is still poorly developed with few studies reporting the associated mass of peat consumed. Furthermore, spatial and temporal variations in burn depth have not been previously quantified.

Background: Sera of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) patients contain high levels of circulating immune complexes composed of IgA1 molecules with aberrantly glycosylated hinge-region O-linked oligosaccharides and IgG or IgA1 antibodies with anti-glycan or anti-hinge-region peptide specificities. Due to damaged sieving properties of the glomerular capillary wall in IgAN, these immune complexes may appear in the urine.

Methods: We collected urine samples from 29 patients with biopsy-proven IgAN (Group I), 27 proteinuric patients with non-IgA nephropathies (Group II) and 28 healthy volunteers (Group III).

In non-invasive diagnosis of renal osteodystrophy the levels of bone minerals and the extent of bone turnover are evaluated. The contents of bone minerals are assessed quantitatively by different modalities of bone densitometry, among which the most accurate one is double-energy bone densitometry. So far no standard examination method was defined nor the most suitable portion of the skeleton for densitometric examination.

The primary aim of this study was evaluation of the efficacy of telmisartan (angiotensin II receptor blocker- AT(1) blocker) on blood pressure in 10 patients with renal impairment in moderate or advanced stages of renal insufficiency and not dependent on haemodialysis. Its effect on proteinuria, renal function (represented by serum urea, creatinine, glomerular filtration), evaluation of overall therapy compliance in comparison with a previously prescribed angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) were secondary aims. Considering the presence of left ventricle hypertrophy in all patients as a marker of hypertensive cardiopathy, the effect of telmisartan therapy on non-invasive cardiovascular parameters (ECG, echocardiography, and assessment of heart rate variability-HRV) was also evaluated.
