Data-informed decision making is a critical goal for many community-based public health research initiatives. However, community partners often encounter challenges when interacting with data. The Community-Engaged Data Science (CEDS) model offers a goal-oriented, iterative guide for communities to collaborate with research data scientists through data ambassadors.

Article Synopsis
  • The International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP) began in 1992, aiming to improve lung cancer detection through annual low-dose CT screenings, involving over 31,000 participants by 2005.
  • In a study updated to December 2022, out of 89,404 participants, 1,257 were diagnosed with primary lung cancer, achieving a 10-year lung cancer-specific survival rate of 81%.
  • The results highlight that 81% of lung cancer cases were detected at stage I, which is crucial since those with stage T1aN0M0 had an impressive survival rate of 95%.

Declines and extirpations of American pika ( populations at historically occupied sites started being documented in the literature during the early 2000s. Commensurate with global climate change, many of these losses at peripheral and lower elevation sites have been associated with changes in ambient air temperature and precipitation regimes. Here, we report on a decline in available genetic resources for an iconic American pika metapopulation, located at the southwestern edge of the species distribution in the Bodie Hills of eastern California, USA.

For range-restricted species with disjunct populations, it is critical to characterize population genetic structure, gene flow, and factors that influence functional connectivity among populations in order to design effective conservation programs. In this study, we genotyped 314 individuals from 16 extant populations of , a United States federally threatened Great Basin Desert using six microsatellite loci. We assessed the effects of Euclidean distance, landscape features, and ecological dissimilarity on the pairwise genetic distance of the sampled populations, while also testing for a potential relationship between .

Studies have demonstrated that some commercial pet (i.e., cat and dog) food products contain high concentrations of mercury (Hg), and some products have Hg concentrations that are higher than expected based on the ingredients included in the package ingredient list.
