The Master Adaptive Clinician Educator: A Framework for Future Educational Leaders in Academic Medicine.

Medical education continues to evolve with technologic advances, cultural changes, and progress in the application of learning theories. One example is Cutrer's concept of the Master Adaptive Learner (MAL), where the trainee self-directs learning and innovates to maintain a level of expertise in a domain. We suggest that this concept can be applied alongside ideas of adaptive and teacher expertise to represent the medical educator of the future-the Master Adaptive Clinician Educator (MACE).

The Effects of Diabetes on Gas Transfer Capacity, Lung Volumes, Muscle Strength, and Cardio-pulmonary Responses During Exercise.

Background: Diabetes is a risk factor for the development of vascular disease, chronic kidney disease, retinopathy, and neuropathy. Diabetes is a co-morbid condition commonly present in patients with respiratory disorders but the extent to which it influences ventilatory capacity, gas exchange, and functional capacity is not well known. Research question Does the presence of diabetes contribute to impairment in spirometry, gas transfer, and exercise capacity?

Methods: Retrospective analysis of all subjects who performed incremental cardio-pulmonary exercise testing (CPET) between 1988 and 2012 at McMaster University Medical Centre.

Benralizumab for allergic asthma: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Background: Benralizumab induces rapid and near-complete depletion of eosinophils from blood and lung tissue. We investigated whether benralizumab could attenuate the allergen-induced late asthmatic response (LAR) in participants with allergic asthma.

Methods: Participants with allergic asthma who demonstrated increased sputum eosinophils and LAR at screening were randomised to benralizumab 30 mg or matched placebo given every 4 weeks for 8 weeks (3 doses).

An Unusual Case of Hemothorax in an Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Patient Following Sildenafil Use.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a disorder of collagen production that affects the connective tissues of the body. It can cause several conditions and severely affect patients' quality of life and activities of daily living. Here, we present an unusual case of hemothorax in a patient with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome after sildenafil use.
