Estimation of Average Intraocular Lens Power for Cataract Surgeries in Trincomalee District, Sri Lanka: A Single-Centre Retrospective Descriptive Study.

Introduction The Sri Lankan economic crisis that began in 2019 led to the suspension of cataract services in many districts. Although humanitarian missions were quick to supply materials, there was a lack of scientific evidence to predict the required intraocular lens power for patients with cataracts. This study aimed to assess the average lens power among patients from Trincomalee district, Sri Lanka, based on sex and age groups.

Late-onset aortic regurgitation after device closure of atrial septal defect.

A 10-year-old girl underwent successful device closure of a 15-mm atrial septal defect with a short and thick retroaortic rim using a 16-mm atrial septal occluder from the conventional approach under transesophageal echocardiographic guidance. There were no periprocedural complications. The aortic valve was noted to be trileaflet and competent.

Factors influencing participation of elderly population in mass drug administration for lymphatic filariasis: a cross-sectional study.

Background: The success of mass drug administration (MDA) for lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination relies on achieving a participation rate of at least 65% within the endemic community. However, participation of sub-population in the community varies and a significant treatment gap among the elderly population, remains to be addressed. The present study explores the factors influencing the elderly participation in MDA and propose possible solutions to bridge the gap.

Resolution of high aortic valve systolic gradient suggesting significant stenosis following closure of patent ductus arteriosus.

A 3-month-old baby girl presenting with heart failure was found to have a large persistent ductus arteriosus as well as a bicuspid aortic valve with severe aortic stenosis. She underwent surgical ductal closure following which there was complete resolution of aortic valve gradients without requiring any aortic valve intervention. This case highlights the importance of understanding hemodynamics in efficacious management of congenital heart disease.
