Water samples were collected from effluent-dominated urban streams in Tokushima, Kyoto, and Saitama in Japan to roughly determine the contribution of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and surfactants to whole toxicity of the water. Approximately 100 PPCPs including anionic surfactants such as linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS), were chemically analyzed. Using 14 water samples, chronic or sub-chronic toxicity tests were conducted on three aquatic species, the green alga Raphidocelis subcapitata, the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia, and the zebrafish Danio rerio.

Acute and chronic (or sub-chronic) toxicity of five selected antimicrobial agents, including triclosan (TCS), triclocarban (TCC), resorcinol, phenoxyethanol and p-thymol, was investigated using the conventional three-aquatic-organism battery. These compounds are widely used in cosmetics and other personal care products and their ecological risk has recently become a significant concern. As results of toxicity tests, TCS was found to be most strongly toxic for green algae [e.

In the present study, aquatic concentrations of seven parabens were determined in urban streams highly affected by treated or untreated domestic sewage in Tokushima and Osaka, Japan. The detected highest concentrations were 670, 207, and 163ngl(-1) for methylparaben, n-propylparaben, and n-butylparaben, respectively in sampling sites with watershed area of no sewer system in Tokushima. Conventional acute/chronic toxicity tests were conducted using medaka (Oryzias latipes), Daphnia magna, and Psuedokirchneriella subcapitata for four parabens, which was consistent with our previous study on three parabens, n-butylparaben, i-butylparaben, and benzylparaben.

A 14-year-old mixed-breed dog was examined because of severe absolute erythrocytosis (PCV, 70%). Plasma erythropoietin (EPO) concentration was consistently high, even though results of arterial blood gas analyses were normal. Radiography, ultrasonography, urinalysis, and serum biochemical analyses did not reveal any cardiac, pulmonary, or renal abnormalities that could cause the erythrocytosis, and erythrocytosis secondary to inappropriate EPO secretion was diagnosed.

Excitatory amino acid transporters play important roles in termination of glutamatergic neurotransmission and protection of neurons from the excitotoxicity of glutamate in the central nervous system. We herein report isolation of cDNA clones of two distinct excitatory amino acid transporters, GLT-1 and EAAC1, from canine brain cortex by PCR-based cloning, and characterization of these transporter subtypes. Canine GLT-1 and EAAC1 exhibited Na+-dependent glutamate transport with high affinities in a Xenopus oocyte expression system.
