Part of the "French paradox" can be explained by the fact that the French eat less than Americans. We document that French portion sizes are smaller in comparable restaurants, in the sizes of individual portions of foods (but not other items) in supermarkets, in portions specified in cookbooks, and in the prominence of "all you can eat" restaurants in dining guides. We also present data, from observations at McDonald's, that the French take longer to eat than Americans.

Sequencing of the human genome is nearing completion and biologists, molecular biologists, and bioinformatics specialists have teamed up to develop global genomic technologies to help decipher the complex nature of pathophysiologic gene function. This review will focus on differential gene expression in ischemic stroke. It will discuss inheritance in the broader stroke population, how experimental models of spontaneous stroke might be applied to humans to identify chromosomal loci of increased risk and ischemic sensitivity, and also how the gene expression induced by stroke is related to the poststroke processes of brain injury, repair, and recovery.

The protozoan parasite Giardia lamblia has the unusual morphology of bearing two equal-sized nuclei. This organism probably represents the earliest diverging lineage of eukaryotes, suggesting that its biological tactics may be transitional. To begin to understand the role played by the two equal-sized nuclei in this organism, and perhaps the role this organism has played along the path to higher eukaryotes, we have analyzed the structure and function of these two nuclei.

We have analyzed the contributions to cytoplasmic stability in an mRNA species with a very short half-life (human c-fos) and an mRNA species with a very long half-life (human beta-globin). When the human c-fos promoter was used to drive the expression of human c-fos, beta-globin, and chimeric DNAs between c-fos and beta-globin in transfected cells, a pulse of mRNA synthesis was obtained following induction of transcription by refeeding quiescent cells with medium containing 15% calf serum. The mRNA half-life was determined by using Northern (RNA) blot analysis of mRNAs prepared at various times following the pulse of transcription.

Melittin addition to rat or hamster adipocytes resulted in inhibition of lipolysis, cyclic AMP accumulation and glucose oxidation. Low concentrations of melittin were not insulin-like with respect to either stimulation of glucose metabolism or inhibition of lipolysis. Higher concentrations of melittin lysed adipocytes.
