Initial observations, based on the proximity of host vesicles to the parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM), suggested that parasites utilize host vesicles to obtain essential nutrients. However, mounting evidence has now unequivocally demonstrated that intracellular pathogens establish membrane contacts with host organelles, establishing control over host cellular machinery.

The family Erinaceidae encompasses 27 extant species in two subfamilies: Erinaceinae, which includes spiny hedgehogs, and Galericinae, which comprises silky-furred gymnures and moonrats. Although they are commonly recognized by the general public, their phylogenetic history remains incompletely understood, and several species have never been included in any molecular analyses. Additionally, previous research suggested that the species diversity of Erinaceidae might be underestimated.

Background: Sepsis can lead to coagulopathy and microvascular thrombosis. Prior studies, including ours, reported an increased level of extracellular vimentin in blood derived from septic patients. Moreover, we identified the contribution of extracellular vimentin to fibrin formation and to the fibrin clot structure ex vivo in plasma from septic patients.
