The host restricts serovar Typhimurium infection of the gut via inflammasome-dependent sloughing of infected epithelial cells. Here we determined that concurrent caspase 1/11-dependent release of the goblet cell-derived mucin, Muc2, into the intestinal lumen also controls burdens in infected mice. The increased release of mucins from goblet cells in the cecum and nearby proximal colon, and the subsequent thickening of the protective mucus barrier layer in the distal colon, were all dependent on the cytokines interleukin (IL)-18 and IL-22, as deficiencies in either cytokine resulted in reduced mucin secretion.

Knowledge of the bacterial microflora composition and factors influencing the environmental bacterial load can support tailored interventions to lower the risk for HAI. The aims of this study were to: (1) quantify and identify environmental bacteria in one operating room (OR) and one ultrasound room (UR) in a small animal hospital, (2) compare the bacterial load to threshold values suggested for use in human healthcare facilities, (3) characterise the genetic relationship between selected bacterial species to assess clonal dissemination, and (4) investigate factors associated with bacterial load during surgery.

Background & Aims: Addition of sialic acids (sialylation) to glycoconjugates is a common capping step of glycosylation. Our study aims to determine the roles of the overall sialylation in intestinal mucosal homeostasis.
Methods: Mice with constitutive deletion of intestinal epithelial sialylation (IEC Slc35a1 mice) and mice with inducible deletion of sialylation in intestinal epithelium (TM-IEC Slc35a1 mice) were generated, which were used to determine the roles of overall sialylation in intestinal mucosal homeostasis by ex vivo and mutiomics studies.
The world's oceans are challenged by climate change linked warming with typically highly populated coastal areas being particularly susceptible to these effects. Many studies of climate change on the marine environment use large, short-term temperature manipulations that neglect factors such as long-term adaptation and seasonal cycles. In this study, a Baltic Sea 'heated' bay influenced by thermal discharge since the 1970s from a nuclear reactor (in relation to an unaffected nearby 'control' bay) was used to investigate how elevated temperature impacts surface water microbial communities and activities.
