BaCf3: highly thermostable bacteriocin from BTSS3 antagonistic on food-borne pathogens.

In the present study, we characterized bacteriocin BaCf3, isolated and purified from BTSS3, and demonstrated its inhibitory potential on growth and biofilm formation of certain food spoilage bacteria and pathogens. Purification was by gel filtration chromatography and its molecular weight was 3028.422 Da after MALDI-TOF MS.

Characterization of Deep Sea Fish Gut Bacteria with Antagonistic Potential, from Centroscyllium fabricii (Deep Sea Shark).

The bacterial isolates from Centroscyllium fabricii (deep sea shark) gut were screened for antagonistic activity by cross-streak method and disc diffusion assay. This study focuses on strain BTSS-3, which showed antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria including Salmonella Typhimurium, Proteus vulgaris, Clostridium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus circulans, Bacillus macerans and Bacillus pumilus. BTSS3 was subjected to phenotypic characterization using biochemical tests, SEM imaging, exoenzyme profiling and antibiotic susceptibility tests.

The genome sequence of Atlantic cod reveals a unique immune system.

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) is a large, cold-adapted teleost that sustains long-standing commercial fisheries and incipient aquaculture. Here we present the genome sequence of Atlantic cod, showing evidence for complex thermal adaptations in its haemoglobin gene cluster and an unusual immune architecture compared to other sequenced vertebrates. The genome assembly was obtained exclusively by 454 sequencing of shotgun and paired-end libraries, and automated annotation identified 22,154 genes.

Interactions within a protein structure and interactions between proteins in an assembly are essential considerations in understanding molecular basis of stability and functions of proteins and their complexes. There are several weak and strong interactions that render stability to a protein structure or an assembly. Protein Interactions Calculator (PIC) is a server which, given the coordinate set of 3D structure of a protein or an assembly, computes various interactions such as disulphide bonds, interactions between hydrophobic residues, ionic interactions, hydrogen bonds, aromatic-aromatic interactions, aromatic-sulphur interactions and cation-pi interactions within a protein or between proteins in a complex.

Strategies for the effective identification of remotely related sequences in multiple PSSM search approach.

Searches using position specific scoring matrices (PSSMs) have been commonly used in remote homology detection procedures such as PSI-BLAST and RPS-BLAST. A PSSM is generated typically using one of the sequences of a family as the reference sequence. In the case of PSI-BLAST searches the reference sequence is same as the query.
