The mean age of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) onset is around 50 years as reported in several clinical trials involving Caucasian patients. However, clinical observations suggest that Mexican RA patients' disease is initiated at a younger age. Objective: To determine the safety and efficacy of intravenous (IV) pamidronate treatment in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients who have had a suboptimal response to nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Methods: Pamidronate at 60 mg was compared with pamidronate at 10 mg rather than placebo in view of the high incidence of transient arthralgias upon first IV exposure to the drug. The drug were given monthly for 6 months in a randomized double-blind, controlled trial.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine if physician assessments of their patients' health status after the medical encounter are comparable to their patients' self-assessment of their own health.

Methods: Consecutive patients with musculoskeletal diseases were recruited when they attended 1 of the rheumatology outpatient clinics selected for the study. Five physicians participated in the study, 4 based at an academic center and 1 in the community.
