Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is an infectious disease which thrives at the wildlife-livestock interface. Exmoor has the largest herd of wild red deer () in England, and also a large number of dairy and beef farms. The population, health and well-being of the herd are managed by a combination of hunting with hounds and by stalking.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: Alternative milk products are becoming more visible and popular, but nutrient data to compare these products to traditional cow's milk are not easily accessible. By summarizing this nutritional information, this project aims to help primary care providers take better care of their patients by providing easy to access nutritional comparison between cow's milk and milk alternatives such as plant-based milks and goat's milk.
Methods: This project uses data from the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Data Central database and publicly available nutrition label data to compare the nutritional content of selected milk.
Aims: To investigate the association between circulating non-transferrin-bound iron [NTBI], and markers of oxidative stress, endothelial function and inflammation in subjects with type 2 diabetes and non-diabetic subjects with varying degrees of obesity.
Methods: Plasma NTBI was measured by HPLC, together with total iron, iron-binding capacity, transferrin saturation and soluble transferrin receptor, together with total and reduced ascorbate, malondialdehyde [MDA], E-selectin and high-sensitivity c-reactive protein [hs-CRP] in groups of 28 subjects with type 2 diabetes, 28 non-obese controls and 17 obese non-diabetic subjects.
Results: Levels of NTBI were higher than controls in the diabetes group, but the total serum iron levels were lower.

Many premature babies, especially those with a low birth weight are given multiple transfusions during their first few weeks of life. The major serious complications of prematurity include bronchopulmonary dysplasia, with lesser incidences of retinopathy of prematurity, intraventricular haemorrhage, and necrotising enterocolitis. Many studies have shown correlations between the receipt of blood transfusions and the development of these conditions, but little is known of the underlying pathophysiology of this relationship.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Recent studies have shown large increases in non-transferrin-bound iron (NTBI) and biomarkers of oxidative stress in the extracellular medium of packed red blood cell units during storage. It has been further suggested that transfusion-mediated iron and oxidative load may contribute to transfusion-related morbidity in premature babies. The origin and nature of the NTBI is currently unclear, but the release of iron from oxidatively modified haemoglobin and haem has been suggested.
