Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify variables at the time of clinical presentation that place patients at higher risk for mortality following carotid endarterectomy (CEA) for symptomatic lesions. Further, this study will create a risk score for mortality within 2 years following CEA for symptomatic stenosis to help tailor future postoperative and long-term management by identifying patients who require heightened vigilance in postoperative care to facilitate survival.

Methods: The Vascular Quality Initiative CEA module was queried for procedures performed for symptomatic (within 180 days) carotid bifurcation stenosis.

Thirteen new 4,7-disubstituted pyrimido[4,5-]pyrimidines were synthesized via a straightforward methodology starting from thiourea. The anti-proliferative activity of these compounds was evaluated across a diverse panel of eight cancer cell lines, with derivatives and showing efficacy against several hematological cancer types. Furthermore, all compounds were assessed for their antiviral potency against a panel of viruses.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for peripheral arterial atherosclerotic disease (PAD). Hypertension deteriorates arterial wall function and the morphology of all layers of arteries. Endothelial cell injury enhances permeability and promotes migration of cholesterol and monocytes into the vessel wall.

Adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MeD) has been associated with a reduced incidence of peripheral arterial disease (PAD)/lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) in observational trials and in a randomized trial. In secondary prevention, a lower hazard ratio for composite major adverse cardiovascular events has been associated with better adherence to MeD in a relatively small, randomized trial. This has not been confirmed in a sub-analysis of a large interventional trial of dual antithrombotic treatment.
