Infants admitted to Danish neonatal units demonstrate satisfactory growth independent of feeding type at discharge.

Aim: The aim was to investigate feeding type at discharge; exclusively breastfeeding (EBF), mixed breastfeeding (MBF), and formula milk feeding (FMF), factors associated with feeding type, and changes in weight-for-age z-score (ΔWAZ) in infants admitted to Danish neonatal units.

Methods: Using data from the Danish National Quality Database for Births and the Danish Newborn Quality Database, we included 8639 mother-infant dyads admitted ≥5 days between February 2019 and December 2021. We used logistic regression to investigate associations between maternal and infant factors and feeding type, and descriptive statistics to describe ΔWAZ and feeding type at discharge.

Exclusive or partial breastfeeding and estimated protein intake in infancy: Associations with childhood growth and body composition at 7 years of age in the Odense Child Cohort.

Background: Protein intake in infancy influences infant growth, body composition, and possibly metabolic programming later in life. Our objectives were to investigate whether macronutrient content in mother's own milk (MOM) differed between exclusive (EBF) or partial breastfeeding (PBF), including an estimation of protein intake (ePI) during the first 6 months of life. Second, to investigate associations of feeding type and ePI with childhood growth and body composition at 7 years.

Nesfatin-1 in Human Milk and Its Association with Infant Anthropometry.

Breastfed infants have different growth patterns to formula-fed infants and are less likely to develop obesity later in life. Nesfatin-1 is an anorexigenic adipokine that was discovered in human milk more than a decade ago, and its role in infant appetite regulation is not clear. Our aim was to describe nesfatin-1 levels in human milk collected 3-4 months postpartum, associations with infant anthropometry, and factors (maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (mBMI), high weight gain during pregnancy, milk fat, and energy content) possibly influencing nesfatin-1 levels.

Stoma Closure Improves Head Circumference Growth in Very Preterm Infants after Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

Introduction:  Very preterm infants (VPIs) surgically treated for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) are at risk of growth retardation. The aim of this study was to demonstrate and compare growth during the first 6 years of life in VPIs with stoma after NEC surgery with VPIs without NEC surgery.

Materials And Methods:  We included all VPIs surgically treated due to NEC at the Odense University Hospital from August 1, 2004, to July 31, 2008.

[Symptomatic zinc deficiency in a breast-fed infant].

Nutrition containing zinc is of special practical importance in infants and children. Perinatal zinc deficiency manifestations include erosive dermatitis, alopecia, diarrhoea, central nervous system dysfunction and immune system deficiency. We present a case story of an ex-preterm, exclusively breast-fed infant who presented with irritability, clinical signs of infection, an atypical rash and signs of oral candidiasis.
