Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates factors that can help prevent and reduce the severity of anastomotic leakage (AL), a serious complication after esophagectomy and gastric tube reconstruction, by analyzing data from 183 patients with esophageal cancer over a five-year period.
  • - AL was found in 22% of patients, with a significant decrease in rates after the introduction of blood perfusion evaluation using indocyanine green, dropping from 28.0% to 14.4%.
  • - The lack of blood perfusion evaluation was identified as a major risk factor for AL and was linked to longer recovery times and increased interventions, emphasizing the importance of this evaluation in improving patient outcomes post-surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how bariatric/metabolic surgery affects the incidence and severity of COVID-19 among patients in Japan, amidst ongoing debates about its protective benefits.
  • Data were collected from 83 institutions, revealing that while there were no severe cases or deaths among 119 patients studied, moderate COVID-19 cases were notably more prevalent in these bariatric patients than in the general population.
  • The findings suggest that bariatric/metabolic surgery does not reduce the risk of COVID-19 complications, as moderate cases were linked to specific risk factors such as dyslipidemia and prior infection.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focuses on the challenge of diagnosing gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), particularly those that are smaller than 20 mm, which are often categorized as subepithelial lesions (SELs).
  • Researchers employed various endoscopic ultrasound techniques—specifically EUS elastography and contrast-enhanced harmonic EUS—to evaluate their effectiveness in distinguishing GISTs from other SELs.
  • The results showed that combining EUS strain elastography with CH-EUS enhanced diagnostic accuracy, making these methods promising tools for the early identification of GISTs.

Background: The long-term outcomes of gastric tube cancer (GTC) are unclear. This study therefore aimed to clarify clinicopathologic features and the long-term outcomes of patients with GTC.

Methods: The 25 patients who were diagnosed with GTC between April 2003 and December 2022 at our hospital were eligible for inclusion in this retrospective study, and this included 27 lesions.

Background: This study aims to prove the feasibility and safety of robotic gastrectomy using the hinotori™ Surgical Robot System (Medicaroid Corporation, Kobe, Japan).

Methods: We retrospectively enrolled the 16 patients who underwent gastrectomy by the hinotori™ Surgical Robot System for gastric cancer at our hospital between June 2023 and January 2024. Console surgeons performed almost all lymphadenectomies, including the clipping of vessels.
