Physical, Mental, and Financial Impacts From Drought in Two California Counties, 2015.

Objectives: To evaluate health impacts of drought during the most severe drought in California's recorded history with a rapid assessment method.

Methods: We conducted Community Assessments for Public Health Emergency Response during October through November 2015 in Tulare County and Mariposa County to evaluate household water access, acute stressors, exacerbations of chronic diseases and behavioral health issues, and financial impacts. We evaluated pairwise associations by logistic regression with pooled data.

Osmotic Stress Reduces Ca2+ Signals through Deformation of Caveolae.

Caveolae are membrane invaginations that can sequester various signaling proteins. Caveolae have been shown to provide mechanical strength to cells by flattening to accommodate increased volume when cells are subjected to hypo-osmotic stress. We have previously found that caveolin, the main structural component of caveolae, specifically binds Gαq and stabilizes its activation state resulting in an enhanced Ca(2+) signal upon activation.

A feasibility study of the use of asynchronous telepsychiatry for psychiatric consultations.

Objective: This study examined the feasibility of conducting psychiatric consultations using asynchronous, or store-and-forward, video-based telepsychiatry.

Methods: Video-recorded 20- to 30-minute assessments of 60 nonemergency, English-speaking adult patients in a medically underserved county in California were uploaded along with other patient data to a Web-based record. Two psychiatrists then used the record to provide psychiatric consultations to the referring primary care providers.

Entirely intracanalicular meningioma: contrast-enhanced MR findings in a rare entity.

We report an unusual case of an entirely intracanalicular meningioma in a 51-year-old woman. Contrast-enhanced MR images showed an enhancing lesion filling the lateral portion of the left internal auditory canal. Our findings suggest that meningiomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of entirely intracanalicular masses.
