Two-dimensional (2D) nanostructured liquid crystals containing fluorinated cyclohexylphenyl and cyclic carbonate moieties have been developed as quasi-solid-state self-organized electrolytes for safe lithium-ion batteries. We have designed lithium ion-conductive liquid-crystalline (LC) materials with fluorine substituents on mesogens for improved oxidation stability. Computational studies suggest that the fluorination of mesogens lowers the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of LC molecules and improves their oxidation resistance as electrolytes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the effects of prophylactic neck dissection and additional therapy on patients undergoing transoral surgery for hypopharyngeal cancer from 2015 to 2021.
  • Out of 221 patients, a high 3-year local recurrence-free survival rate of 89.1% was observed, but positive margins led to higher rates of regional recurrence and distant metastasis, though local recurrence did not affect overall survival.
  • The conclusion suggests that monitoring for recurrences is important and that prophylactic neck dissection might not be essential for all patients with positive margins.

The nuptial flight of ants usually occurs during certain periods of the year. Alate females and males fly out of their nests to mate simultaneously. In the genus Camponotus, sex-specific chemicals are deposited in the male head; however, their roles in nuptial flight have not yet been clarified.

Article Synopsis
  • * Among 356 patients, those in the proximal group showed a trend toward higher rates of complications at admission but similar in-hospital death rates and major cardiovascular events (MACE) compared to the non-proximal group.
  • * The findings suggest that while severe acute conditions were more common in proximal occlusions, the overall long-term clinical outcomes, measured by MACE, were not significantly different between the two groups.

Objective: Tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) is one of the most established methods for voice reacquisition following total laryngectomy. The most difficult complication following TEP is the management of saliva leakage or secretion into the trachea due to TE fistula enlargement. In this study, we devised a new strategy to close TE fistulas and confirmed its safety and effectiveness.
