Structural genomic variation and behavioral interactions underpin a balanced sexual mimicry polymorphism.

How phenotypic diversity originates and persists within populations are classic puzzles in evolutionary biology. While balanced polymorphisms segregate within many species, it remains rare for both the genetic basis and the selective forces to be known, leading to an incomplete understanding of many classes of traits under balancing selection. Here, we uncover the genetic architecture of a balanced sexual mimicry polymorphism and identify behavioral mechanisms that may be involved in its maintenance in the swordtail fish Xiphophorus birchmanni.

Sphenochoanal polyps in children - a systematic review (1995‒2021).

Objectives: Nasal polyps that originate from the sphenoid sinus and reach the nasopharynx are called sphenochoanal polyps. Reports on sphenochoanal polyps in children have thus far been limited only to case reports. This review aims to describe and summarize clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, surgical approaches to the sphenochoanal polyps with recurrence rate after surgery in pediatric patients reported in the literature.

The role of preoperative imaging for auditory implants in children.

<b>Introduction:</b> Preoperative imaging, besides audiological evaluation, plays a major role in evaluation of candidacy for auditory implants, and in particular cochlear implants. It is essential to assess whether the basic criteria necessary for implantation are met. Diagnostic imaging is crucial not only in determining candidacy, but also determining the feasibility of cochlear implantation as it allow to anticipate surgical difficulties which could preclude or complicate the implantation of the device.

Academic Challenges and School Service Utilization in Children with Sickle Cell Disease.

Objectives: To describe the academic concerns and risk strata of children with sickle cell disease (SCD) as identified through a parent-directed screening tool and to compare the rates of these concerns with actual school service utilization in the clinic population.

Study Design: We completed a retrospective review of patients with SCD referred to the school intervention program during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years because of a school-related concern raised by parents or noted by the clinical team. All parents completed the Brief School Needs Inventory (BSNI), a validated parent-response tool used to stratify academic risk.

The influence of Slim Modiolar electrode on residual hearing in pediatric patients.

Purpose: Hearing preservation cochlear implantation is an established procedure in patients with low-frequency residual hearing, especially in pediatric cochlear implantation. More delicate, thin electrode arrays can minimize damage in the inner ear and enhance the possibility for residual hearing preservation. The Cochlear CI532 electrode has been reported as an electrode with the potential for residual hearing preservation.
