The method for the determination of As, Cd, Hg, and Pb in foods by pressure digestion and inductively coupled plasma (ICP)/MS, previously published in J. AOAC Int. 90, 844-856 (2007), was approved as First Action 2013.

Progress in herbicide determination with the thylakoid bioassay.

Chloroplast thylakoids are used as biological units to determine herbicides in different kinds of water samples as well as in aqueous extracts of compost, soil or food samples. The thylakoid bioassay shows clearly inhibition of fluorescence yield in the presence of photosystem II specific herbicides. Due to this method the ecotoxicological effect of samples with unknown pollutants can be tested fast and cost effective.

Validation of mercury determination by solid sampling Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry and a specially designed furnace.

Certified reference materials (CRMs) of different origin were used to validate the direct determination of total mercury by solid sampling Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometry (SS-ZAAS) and a specially designed furnace. The temperature program provides only for one step. Atomisation of mercury and pyrolysis of the matrix is performed at a constant temperature in the range of 900-1000 degrees C.

Correcting sensitivity drift during long-term multi-element signal measurements by solid sampling-ETV-ICP-MS.

Solid sampling-electrothermal vaporisation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (SS-ETV-ICP-MS) is an attractive technique for the direct simultaneous determination of trace elements in solid samples and especially in long-term studies (i.e. assessment of the homogeneity of reference materials).

Determination of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry in foods after pressure digestion: NMKL interlaboratory study.

Thirteen laboratories participated in an interlaboratory method performance (collaborative) study on a method for the determination of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) after pressure digestion including the microwave heating technique. Prior to the study, the laboratories were able to practice on samples with defined element levels (pretrial test). The method was tested on a total of 7 foodstuffs: carrot puree, fish muscle, mushroom, graham flour, simulated diet, scampi, and mussel powder.
