Evaluation of growth factor independence 1 expression in patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

Objective: Growth factor independence 1 (GFI1), a transcriptional repressor, is required for hematopoietic stem cell maintenance and self-renewal in addition to controlling differentiation and proliferation of myeloid cells. As murine studies have demonstrated that this transcription factor has a notable role in the initiation and progression of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) disease, the aim of the current study was to investigate and review the influence of GFI1 in human AML cells.

Methods: GFI1 expression levels were measured by means of real-time polymerase chain reaction in 96 primary AML samples which were then compared to gene expression levels observed in 18 healthy subjects.

Successful Splenectomy Management in a Patient With Moderate Factor VII Deficiency and Concomitant Severe Hereditary Spherocytosis.

By the advent of the effective therapies for many coagulation diseases and hereditary spherocytosis (HS), patient's survival has been improved significantly; however, if patients are diagnosed late or left untreated, both diseases could ominously be life threatening. Concurrent occurring of factor VII (FVII) deficiency and HS is extremely rare and there is no literature report that explain this condition, thus far. In this study, we confronted a 9-year-old female patient diagnosed with HS and enlarged spleen as a result of this blood disorder.

Neonatal neuroblastoma presented with respiratory distress, a case report.

Background: The most common neonatal tumor is neuroblastoma and adrenal gland is the most common site of involvement. 11-26% of this tumor is seen in the thorax of neonates. Due to a similar appearance of the mediastinal tumor with pneumonia, a high index of suspicion is necessary for early diagnosis of this disorder.

Ewing Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor in the Adrenal Gland of a Child.

Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) typically occurs in long or flat bones, soft tissues, or less often, solid organs. Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor arising from the adrenal gland is extremely rare, especially in children, and only limited cases are reported previously. Herein, we review a case of a 22-month-old girl who presented to our department with abdominal pain, bulging of the left flank, and a nonfunctioning adrenal lesion which was found to be an adrenal ES/PNET.
