Background: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an immune dysregulation disorder affecting multiple organs. Cardiac involvement, prevalently myocardial, is associated with poor outcomes in SSc patients. Several investigations explored the role of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in the diagnosis of scleroderma-related cardiomyopathy and analyzed the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic correlations utilizing CMR examinations.

Pericardial diseases have gained renewed clinical interest, leading to a renaissance in the field. There have been many recent advances in pericardial diseases in both multimodality cardiac imaging of diagnoses, such as recurrent, transient constrictive and effusive-constrictive pericarditis, and targeted therapeutics, especially anti-interleukin (IL)-1 agents that affect the inflammasome as part of autoinflammatory pathophysiology. There remains a large educational gap for clinicians, leading to variability in evaluation and management of these patients.

The use of cardiac CT and MRI is rapidly expanding based on strong evidence from large international trials. The number of physicians competent to interpret cardiac CT and MRI may be unable to keep pace with the increasing demand. Societies and organizations have prescribed training requirements for interpreting cardiac CT and MRI, with recent updates focusing on the increased breadth of competency that is now required due to ongoing imaging advances.

Objective: Sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors significantly improve cardiovascular outcomes in diabetic patients; however, the mechanism is unclear. We hypothesized that dapagliflozin improves cardiac outcomes via beneficial effects on systemic and cardiac inflammation and cardiac fibrosis.

Research And Design Methods: This randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial enrolled 62 adult patients (mean age 62, 17% female) with type 2 diabetes (T2D) without known heart failure.
